Kia ora lovely humans!
When I was younger, I suffered from crippling abdominal cramps on a regular basis. I couldn’t eat, sleep, drink or even lie comfortably when it was happening. Noone could work out what was going on. It wasn’t until I was in the medical centre in the middle of the night once again, that a female doctor decided to do an abdominal ultrasound and found that my gallbladder was a third full of stones. I had been suffering for 10 years. Noone before this moment had thought to check my gallbladder, because I didn’t meet the normal “criteria” for gallstones.
Fast forward 18 years, and I’ve been on another quest to uncover what feels unbalanced in my health again. I’ve seen multiple people, completed multiple tests and it’s been multiple years, and I’ve now been told I’ve got PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Oh, and apparently I should have been taking digestive enzymes since I had my gallbladder out, because, despite what the surgeon told me at the time, it does have an impact on your body’s digestive function. And, that impacts your long-term health too.
I had a lot of feelings when I got the diagnosis - grief, anger, frustration, relief. I had to have a lot of listening time and I had to be really clear on what I needed from people, I also had to do a lot of repairing with my kiddos when the stress of it all bubbled over. The emotions would dissipate when I felt validated in my experience and they would increase when someone would suggest a fix, or asked me if I’d tried XYZ, or dismissed it as no big deal. It was really fascinating for me to acutely observe my internal response to external reactions.
What I feel incredibly grateful for, is, once I had sat with and moved through the feelings, I was ready to take action myself and I knew exactly where to go. About a decade ago, one of my husband’s old work colleagues opened a business called the PCOS Nutritionist, so I looked Clare Goodwin up immediately.
I’ve found amazing support in Clare, who is taking a holistic approach to supporting me to restore my vitality.
Here’s the difference with Clare - for the first time in a health scenario - I actually feel seen and heard. She validates my experience because she’s been there - she’s navigated this territory herself. She can explain things in a way that I understand because she’s lived it. She can give me practical advice because she knows what it’s like to need to make changes that are sustainable when you’re navigating parenting, working and general life stuff on top of health news. She’s careful about the language she uses - she understands that her words have impact and can imbed themselves into someone’s psyche and become an internal narrative.
This is what I know will be created in the Aware Parenting Support Circle - a place to feel seen and heard, to have your feelings validated, to have practical, sustainable suggestions when you want them, to feel like you’re navigating parenting alongside a waka (canoe) of powerful wāhine (women), rather than isolated and alone.
